Recycling Soft Plastics

November 14, 2017

We are all trying to do our bit to recycle, re-use and compost. However soft plastic is one of those things that isn't allowed in our recycling bins. We can minimise our plastic consumption but in some situations its unavoidable. It doesn't need to go to landfill - there is another option.

The REDcycle program allows you to recycle all your soft plastic at participating Coles and Woolworths stores. If you're not sure what you can recycle do the scrunch test. If you can scrunch it, it can be REDcycled. The soft plastic is then diverted from landfill and turned into a resource used to make new products. The REDcycle website is a great resource to assist what can be REDcycled, locations and other frequently asked questions.

The REDcycle Program is a voluntary, industry-led initiative where everyone involved in the life cycle of a product’s packaging – manufacturers, retailers and consumers – choose to share responsibility for its best end-of-life outcome.

  • RED Group recovers and recycles over 3 million pieces of soft plastic (bags and packaging) every week. Its as easy as
  • RED Group has recovered and recycled over 380 million pieces of soft plastic since 2011
  • That's over 1580 tonnes of soft plastic that will never end up in landfill, on our beaches or in our waterways
  • That's the equivalent to 395 elephants (weighing 4 tonnes each)
Of course its best to limit our use of soft plastics where possible and consider alternative products and options where available. Also check with your local council regarding the recycling options avialble in your area.
